A Mother's Day Tribute

A Mother’s worry wears you thin
Your child’s success builds you up again
Yours are charms, as are mine
And I watched you give them equal time
We struggle, we fight, we kiss goodnight
We love, we hate, we share delight
A vicious circle we travel and always at top speed
Curves and hills, paved and not
Our chariot jumps, bumps and slides evermore
Behind wild horses pulling us onward through life
Not just you and me, but our family
Full speed ahead we charge to a crossing meant for two
Or goal is the end of a long beaten path
Where there is a picnic with wine, pastoral quiet and worry free
A place of Freedom for just you and me
But down this road we travel, with young ones hanging to us still
Like a robin in a nest, four mouths to feed
Eventually they grow and learn and trust you, then they leave
Mother, you hovered, you fed you taught
You spread your wings as cover every night
And you gave them all as well as could be
And you cried and cried as they all leapt free
But now there is you, and now there is me
And we gather again the reins
And those four mighty horses take flight to that crossing ahead
There will be flowers and candy along the way
Days will be rhubarb sweet, but bitter still
There will be roads paved smooth day after day
And stones and boulders and holes so deep
Forever there’ll be
For God chose that path for you and for me.
